History
The area now known as Fuquay-Varina was first called “Piney Woods” and was inhabited by the Sippihaw Indians. It is believed that the first European settler to arrive was a Frenchman named William Fuquay, who purchased 1,000 acres of land for 50 cents an acre in 1805. One of his descendents discovered a mineral spring on this large plantation, claiming that the minerals in the water contained healing properties. This declaration attracted tourists to the area, and by the early 1900s, the community was called “Fuquay Springs.”
During the Civil War, a woman named Varina sent letters to J.D. Ballentine, a rebel soldier in the Confederate Army, and the two wed after the war. The couple was instrumental in the development of the town of Varina, a community J.D. named after his wife. The town developed quickly due to the tobacco industry and introduction of the railroad, and the two towns of Fuquay-Varina merged in 1963. Today, this colorful history is evident in the two quaint downtown areas.
